Viet nam prioritizes renewable energy development

Việt Nam will strive to increase the proportion of electricity generated from renewable sources (wind, solar, biomass…) from 3.5% in 2010 to 4.5% in 2020 and 6% in 2030, according to the national plan on developing electricity in the 2011 – 2020 period that were recently approved by the Prime Minister.

The country will increase the total capacity of wind power to 1,000 MW by 2020 and 6,200 MW by 2030, or raise the proportion of wind power from roughly 0% now to 0.7% by 2020 and 2.4% by 2030.Việt Nam also plans to increase the total capacity of hydroelectricity from the current 9,200 MW to 17,400 MW in 2020.According to the plan, Việt Nam will put into operation its first nuclear power reactor in 2020. By 2030, nuclear power will have capacity of 10,700 MW, or output of 70.5 billion kWh, accounting for 10.1% of the total electricity output.Việt Nam will produce and import 194 - 210 billion kWh of electricity in 2015, 330 - 362 billion kWh in 2020, and 695 - 834 billion kWh in 2030.Most rural households will have access to electricity by 2020According to the plan, all communes and 98.6% of rural households nationwide will have access to electricity by 2015. By 2020, most of households in rural areas will have access to electricity.In the 2011 – 2015 period, Việt Nam will expand its national grid to supply electricity to 500,000 rural households, and provide electricity generated from renewable sources to 377,000 other families.From 2016 to 2020, the country will have additional 200,000 rural households accessing to the national grid, and 231,000 other families having electricity generated from renewable sources. The total investment for the local electricity sector by 2020 is estimated at US$48.8 billion. In the 2011 – 2030 period, the investment will increase to US $ 123.8 billion.
